Privacy Policy

UT Course Builder is a Chrome extension that helps UT Austin students generate, compare, and manage possible course schedules.

Summary

UT Course Builder does not operate developer-controlled servers, include advertising or analytics trackers, sell user data, or use user data for advertising.

The extension stores planner information locally in Chrome, communicates directly with UT Austin websites to provide course and degree-planning features, and communicates with Rate My Professors to retrieve public professor-rating information.

Information Stored Locally

UT Course Builder uses Chrome's local extension storage to save information needed for its user-facing features, including:

  • Selected semester
  • Added courses and section information
  • Generated and saved schedules
  • Schedule filters and professor filters
  • Pinned sections, course colors, breaks, and other planner preferences
  • Completed, in-progress, future, and planned coursework retrieved for planning features
  • Degree-audit and missing-core summaries
  • A basic UT authentication-status indicator, not UT credentials
  • Cached Rate My Professors lookup results

Rate My Professors results are cached locally for up to seven days to reduce repeated network requests. Other locally stored planner data remains in Chrome until the user removes it, clears the extension's storage, or uninstalls the extension.

UT Austin Session and Data

When a user chooses to connect to UT, the extension uses the user's existing authenticated browser session to communicate directly with UT Austin websites.

Depending on the features the user accesses, the extension may retrieve and process:

  • Registrar course, section, instructor, meeting-time, location, and availability information
  • Course descriptions, prerequisites, corequisites, and restrictions
  • Completed, in-progress, future, and planned coursework
  • Degree-audit results, requirements, progress, and missing core areas

The extension may also submit forms to UT Austin when the user requests actions such as running a degree audit or applying planned-course changes.

UT authentication is handled by UT Austin. UT Course Builder does not receive or store the user's password. It does not copy UT authentication cookies into extension storage or transmit UT credentials to the developer or to Rate My Professors.

Rate My Professors

When professor-rating information is requested or displayed, UT Course Builder sends the instructor's name and associated course code to Rate My Professors over HTTPS. This information is used only to identify the appropriate UT Austin professor and retrieve public information such as:

  • Average rating
  • Average difficulty
  • Would-take-again percentage
  • Number of ratings
  • Department and associated course codes

UT Course Builder does not send the user's name, EID, UT credentials, academic record, degree-audit information, saved schedules, or browser history to Rate My Professors.

Historical Grade Distributions

Historical UT grade-distribution information is queried from a database packaged with the extension and processed locally in the browser. Course and instructor selections are not sent to a developer-operated server for this feature.

How Information Is Used

Information handled by UT Course Builder is used only to provide or improve its scheduling and academic-planning features, including:

  • Searching for courses and retrieving current sections
  • Generating conflict-free schedule combinations
  • Applying schedule, professor, availability, time, and break preferences
  • Displaying professor ratings and historical grade distributions
  • Evaluating prerequisites and corequisites
  • Displaying completed and planned coursework
  • Showing degree impact and missing core requirements
  • Calculating walking times
  • Saving and restoring planner state

Information Sharing

UT Course Builder does not sell user data or share it for advertising, analytics, profiling, or marketing.

Information is transmitted only when necessary to provide requested features:

  • UT Austin websites receive requests needed for course schedules, session verification, degree audits, academic records, and planned-course actions.
  • Rate My Professors receives instructor names and course codes needed to retrieve public professor-rating information.

No extension data is transmitted to developer-operated servers.

Permissions

UT Course Builder requests the following Chrome permissions:

  • Storage — saves planner information and cached professor-rating results locally in Chrome.
  • Tabs — opens or focuses the planner and UT login pages, detects completion of the UT login flow, and returns the user to the planner.
  • Scripting — runs user-requested degree-audit forms within temporary UT Austin tabs. It is not used to inject code into Rate My Professors or unrelated websites.
  • UT Austin host access — communicates with UT registrar, degree-audit, and login pages to provide course and academic-planning features.
  • Rate My Professors host access — retrieves public professor-rating information using an instructor name and course code.

The extension does not download or execute remotely hosted code.

Security

Network requests are made over HTTPS directly from the user's browser to UT Austin or Rate My Professors. UT Course Builder does not operate an intermediary server that receives these requests.

Limited Use

Information obtained through browser permissions and website access is used only to provide or improve UT Course Builder's user-facing scheduling and academic-planning features. It is not used for advertising, sold to third parties, transferred for unrelated purposes, or made available for human review except when required by law or when a user deliberately provides information while requesting support.

Data Deletion

Users can delete saved schedules and planner information within the extension where deletion controls are provided. Users can remove all locally stored extension data by clearing the extension's storage or uninstalling UT Course Builder.

Requests already sent to UT Austin or Rate My Professors are governed by those services' respective privacy practices.

Children's Privacy

UT Course Builder is intended for university students and is not directed to children under 13.
